Haiti 2020 Covid-19 Survey

Covid-19 Survey Introduction
As the number of cases of Covid-19 begins to surge rapidly, the death toll from the virus in Haiti is projected to reach into the thousands even by the most optimistic forecasts. This situation represents a major challenge for the country's civic leaders and public officials, especially those tasked with articulating, implementing, and communicating public health policy.
This survey on the Covid-19 outbreak attempts to shed some light on the public’s understanding of and reaction to the pandemic. The results of the survey should allow the entities concerned to begin to adjust their response strategy, particularly in terms of communication.

Survey Execution
Safitek Research conducted a survey via mobile phone of people aged 15 and older across the entire country between May 21 and May 26, 2020.  The survey’s final sample includes 400 respondents and has a 4.9% margin of error. We used a rigorous methodology to ensure we captured a representative sample of the national population. The survey included a range of questions concerning the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus in the country. Below, we highlight the key takeaways from the survey without commentary or analysis.

About the survey methodology

Up until recently, it would have been unfathomable to conduct a rigorous survey in Haiti via telephone. The rapid adoption of mobile phone across the country has made telephone surveys not only possible but perhaps the preferred way to conduct cost effective and rigorous surveys. In the context of the Coronavirus outbreak, a phone survey is also the safest way to reach respondents. We are also finding increasing evidence that respondents are more candid in telephone interviews than they are in person.Based on the available data and research we previously conducted, we know that mobile phone penetration in the country is estimated at 58%1. We also know that this penetration rate is uneven across the country with rural areas lagging far behind urban areas, and with poorer segments of the population lagging far behind their more affluent counterparts.
The challenge in conducting a mobile phone survey in such an environment is to ensure accurate representation of the entire population rather than that of mobile phone owners. In conducting our surveys, we collected geographic, socio-economic, and demographic information about our respondents. This information was fed in real time into our proprietary algorithm guiding the selection of respondents so that our sample could reflect the geographic, demographic, and socio-economic profile of the actual population.
